    Default Anhinga Fishing

An anhinga comes up out of a South Carolina marsh with a freshly speared fish.

Image shot as jpeg with minimal post processing.

I like the fish a lot here. A bit tight in the frame and a lower angle would have helped. Shooting JPEG and is really holding you back, the blacks have no detail and the image is contrasty, compressed and shows many artifacts. If you want to improve your work you really need to learn how to shoot in RAW and process your files, there is no way around it

Thanks very much for checking out this photo and I really appreciate your feedback. I know, I know, I'm getting beaten up constantly about shooting jpegs.
My focus (so to speak) for the past few years has been to capture birds and other wildlife in their natural environment with a sort of journalistic approach where action is the main feature.
Mostly I have just been trying bang stuff out quickly for my wildlife photo blog.

The fish is great. Image quality is very poor as is the framing. But as you insist on shooting JPEGs I for one will no longer comment on that aspect of your photography....

    Hi Phil,
I agree being out there in the field is much more fun than sitting by the computer, but when you have your workflow set up it will only take a few min to process a file and the result will def. be worth the little extra effort.

It's a pity if you put all the effort but end up with a poor output because of lack JPEG limitations and lack of good processing. Keep in mind JPEG w/o original RAW is usually not eligible for submission to most reputable contests or acceptable for publication.

    cheers,
