    Default Dotterel

On the one hand I was pleased to get the shot I haven't seen a dotterel for 35 years on the other I am cursing myself. I had the lens at 400mm and as I moved from one location to another I must have compressed the lens so this is only at 360mm so the crop is bigger than I wanted. It was windy so possibly that is why the plumage looks a little soft along with the crop - a wasted opportunity. I have tried all sorts but the detail is just not there.
(My pal shot them with a 5D Mk11 with 100-400 and what a difference - absolutely night and day. Sulking now!)

You are correct sir. Lovely bird that is hard to get close to in a nice setting with one foot raised. But the IQ is just not there. Some consolation: had you been zoomed all the way out to 400mm the image would have been even softer....

Nice bird looks very active, at 1/500 its showing the motion as can be seen on the raised foot. I suppose the image looks a bit soft due to the motion
i like the bird and its nice piece of action with the raised foot.

Hi Jon, love the strolling pose with the raised foot, and a good low angle of capture. He stands out nicely against the surrounding grasses, and congrats on getting to see a rare sighting for you.

It's a real shame about the sharpness, Jon...but we have all been there, and it's one more Dotterel than I have.

    Thanks for the commiserations!
Oh Chris I think you are too late or so I was told they flew away yesterday!
Artie I am curiousat you comments regarding sharpness, I reckoned the image would have been sharper at 400 as the lens is micro adjusted at 400 and I would not be throwing so many pixels away??
Is your counterargument that the associated magnification would multiply any effect of the wind? (Not mine the ambient!!)
