Great shot and subject. subject a bit centered and more details in the chest would make it even better.

Nice pose and exposure, but I think it would look good with less noise reduction. Noise is a fact of life in some circumstances and not easily concealed. Just think how this would have photographed with film...

Great looking woodpecker with some pretty neat reds near the tail. I like the fresh vegetation at right, but this image would have been stronger had you taken it as a vertical. As for NR, I'm OK with it applied on the BG but never do on the subject and perch. Well exposed and well focused but another round of sharpening for web would be good.

Exposure looks good here. I like the pose but if you are going to stick with horizontal, I would give it more room all around. I am not seeing any details in the whites of the bird's feathers in the chest area. Did you run NR on this area. Also the cheeks.

Hi William, trust Mull was good?

Like Daniel I'm OK with the image, I like also the fact the branch has a nice curvature which adds to the comp. I also like the vegetation as is, gives a nice balance and the overall soft colours. Not always achievable, but good to see the foot. Hope you can get more of this chap, you can always entice them quite easily. If you do continue with this, then I would try using a tripod just for a little more stability?

    Thanks for that Steve

Sadly, after a long illness, my father died on 1st May. Mull was cancelled.

    Hi William,

Great capture of the Woodpecker being well exposed. The Woodpecker could use some more space above the head. To compensate for this I would go for a vertical crop and remove the tender branch to the right and some of the space to the left. Also because the tender branch to the right is in focus and my eyes are somehow distracted by it.

    Regards Steen
