    Default Elephant Rising

This is one of the amazing spectacles that await you if you visit Mana Pools! This photo was taken on foot last year. We were hiding behind a tree, watching this old boy (called Boswell) standing up and breaking branches off which other elephants would also feed on. At one point one of them was only 5 meters from me...one of the best experiences to be had in Africa!!
I can't wait to return to guide a photographic safari to this paradise at the end of August...

    Techs:
    Nikon D800
    Nikkor 80-400mm VR-II @ 360mm
    f8.0 | 1/640 SS | ISO-2000
Full frame image, shot handheld and on foot

Certainly a place on my bucket list, if it is allowed to stay as it is! Wonderful angle you get on foot, and comp goes all the way into the trees. Just about perfect for me Morkel.

Hi Morkel, watching on my mobile device, all looking good to me.
I very much like the images from that place .Specially the ones where the elephants are standing on their hind legs.

I guess I have seen this image before Morkel, I still love it just as much!

Have you thought of a canvas print?

Love everything in it, no crits, congratulations Morkel!

Thanks folks. Gabriela, you saw a different one, from 2012. This was taken in 2013, different part of the park but the same bull

Love it Morkel. Beautiful light, pose, and I love how the thick canopy firmed the BG. This August is too soon for me, but would love to visit Mana Pools next year. Please send me a PM if such a trip is being planned.

Eish Morkel, but you've got two of these amazing shots???!!! Maybe more? Jealousy will eat me up ! What amazing tusks and I thought of this image while I watched a massive herd of ellies yesterday afternoon in the Hluhluwe Park! None of them reached out for a marula fruit (I was hoping they would) although some of them were right under the tree...too many fallen fruit to bother standing on two feet, I guess...

Hope your evening is a pleasant one, we just got back from the Park (again) and some images to download

    Thanks Loi, will do.
Gabriela, I've got enough images of this behaviour over two years' trips to make you cry for a week . Sadly (photographically speaking) this big boy now sports a collar...but there are others in Mana who are good at balancing.
One of my friends photographed an elephant doing exactly this 3x in a row in the Kruger National Park close to Crocodile Bridge rest camp over Easter. It does happen elsewhere!

Morkel!!! Then you must be careful when posting again, you shall be held responsible for my well-being...Budding (yet old) photographer that I am, I might not survive viewing all those gorgeous images of elephants-on-two-legs-reaching-out-for-sweet-leaves!!!

Just unfair, posting all those stunners and expecting us to think it's not one and the same photograph

Just kidding Morkel, you know how much I like your work! Brilliant as ever, keep them coming!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Morkel, for me you have really distinguished these elephants at Mana Pools! No matter how many images you have like this, still amazing to see/capture such a huge animal standing and balancing on its hind legs, delicate giraffe style. The thick tree trunk of the nearby tree adds very well to the composition by paralleling the height of the stretching elephant and then arching over.

Hi Morkel - really like this one. The habitat really adds to the outstanding behavioral aspect. Techs all look good. Only thing I might do is back off on the sharpening of the tree on the right so it doesn't compete with the ele. Too bad about the collar.

    Rachel

Hi Morkel, I have enjoyed the series, but you have spoilt us with the light on previous ones, which this I feel lacks. I agree with Rachel, the behavioural aspect and location is perfect, techs & framing look spot on.
