    Default Stick Man?

This Great Blue Heron with a pretty nice present for momma was photographed at the Venice Rookery during the recent Post X-mas IPT. I am always amazed that very few of the many photographers at the rookery often do not even move their gear into position when one of the guys lands right on the bank nearby. I did The pond this year is covered with algae providing a very nice background (especially on dark mornings).

Canon 500mm f/ L IS Lens with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1Ds Mark III. ISO 1250. Evaluative Metering + 1/3 stop: 1/400 sec. at f/8 set manually after histogram check. Gitzo 3530 LSV tripod and Mongoose M3.5 head.

All comments and questions welcome. Don't be shy. Go Giants!

    Later and love,

ps: Yes, the MIII 1Ds is noisier than the 1D MIII because of smaller individual pixels. That said, I just grabbed the camera and went to work. I will be interested to see what happens after I set in-camera ISO noise reduction... With 21 million pixels, the fine detail is mind-blowing.

I don't think you need any suggestions. :) I like the composition and clean BG and the little branch adds to it. The BG still looks a bit noisy on my monitor, particularly around the edges.

    Hi Artie,

Love the details and clean BG. I'm sure you remember but if not I did move my gear and captured a similar image. :)

    What a lovely looking bird.

Wonderful composition and I love the clean green bg. Sharp as a tack and the stick is great. I wish the bird had turned his head just a tad toward you. Lovely portrait.

Be careful what you wish for... If the bird had turned its head a tad more toward me, the stick would have merged with the bird's neck--something that I was trying to avoid.

ps: Yes, Maxis was one of the few who was interested in this handsome guy.

Hey, we almost beat them last week...

They are good though, but I do not think that they will win the whole thing. I hope...

Artie, the amount of detail in the bird is fantastic. I must have an issue with my LCD becasue I see some posterization in the green background and apperently no one else does. If your background is really smooth, I must have either an incorrect setting or an issue with my Viewsonic.

Artie this is gorgeous the bg really makes the GBH pop offf the screen and the comp.with the stick is perfectly placed without hindering the subject.

Beautiful image. Interesting to hear that the 1Ds is noisier than the 1D. I can definitely see what appears to be a touch of artifacting where the two shades of green in the BG converge (Green is the worst for that!). I'll definitely be interested in hearing what you think once you try the in camera ISO NR. I've got to imagine that 21MP is something else to see at 100 percent!

    Hi Arthur,

I am a big fan of herons and this is a lovely photograph of one. Allthough i do see some noise it does not bother /distract me that much. The amount of noise visible is easily fixed by any noise reduction programme and i think some of us are too occupied with noise where in the past noise was just part of every shot taken with film.
What i do find less attractive is the large amount of space above the Heron.I do feel that this photograph would have been much stronger when cropped more tight from the top. Also a square crop including more of the Heron's body might have balanced the whole scene a bit more.
The "S"-curved neck combined with the branch and fine detail make this photograph for me.

Looking forward to more shots from your side of the big pond!

    Greetings,

    Jeroen Stel

Hey Artie, I love that deep green that you have in this image. I have to say that the space above the Heron leaves me wanting as well. I'm not sure if I would go square, but I think a tighter pano look might add some more impact to the image. :)

Oh, and it's sad to say but the Pats are gonna' win it all... but your Giants whooped my Bucs yesterday :(

Artie, an excellent image indeed with a superb bg. Similar to the suggestion of Blake, I'd consider cropping so that both branches are equidistant to the edges (which is only about 20 pixels being cropped from the top, if even that) (or leave it alone for article title space).

I do have to disagree with Blake, on the Pats taking it all. The Giants have looked good the last few weeks and gave the Pats a real hard time last week. It would be interesting to see them meet in the big game.
