Default Anyone here have experience with Uniqball

There was some discussion on the Naturescapes forum about this 'new' ballhead from a company called uniqball (formed by a couple of nature photographers). But not too many that have actually used it. Interesting concept trying to combine friction ballhead and gimbal in one. Kind of pricey. Curious if anyone here has any experience using this Ballhead/gimbal.

    The website is www.uniqball.eu

Yep, been using it now for over two weeks now, it's great. I do toggle between the two, Wimberley Gimbal & the Uniqball, going for the larger head which supports the 500, 1DX & 2x very well, or even the 200-400. Smooth action and lightweight, certainly good for landscape work too. It's had a hammering since I got it, plus it will be put on test again at the end of this month as it's lighter and easier to pack as both are factors.

The service is excellent, After sales is First class, as I did have one small issue, but as I said, the Customer service was/is awesome, and I tend not to use that word lightly.

Erik, if you want to see a video of a good friend of mine using it let me know I will PM the link as I tend NOT to add links like this, or I can fwd a direct email for them if you have questions about the product.

Items like this are an investment, it just depends on your usage & budget.

Thanks Steve. I would be interested in a PM with the video source. What intrigues me is the supposed ability to quick switch from using big glass to landscape without having to carry two heads (or an adapter). I do see that they have an accessory so as to covert the Y-direction to an X-direction for use with cameras that have an arca swiss plate attached. Any comment on that from your use?

Hi Erik, I keep the Wimberley plates fixed to the foot of all the lens, and yes you do have another plate which I assume is more for the camera body with a smaller lens, rather than a hefty piece of glass.

    PM will follow.

    Cheers Steve

Per an email exchange with the folks at Uniqball, they tell me that Amazon will be carrying their product in a few weeks. It is believed that the UBH-45 price for US customers will be in the $500 range.

I got the smaller one since a week (don't have quite the heavy lenses that would warrant getting the bigger one) and am very satisfied up to now. Waiting for a bit more use (as in 3-6 months) for a final judgement but at the moment I don't regret getting it.

Here in the US, it is supposed to be available on Amazon at some point. I was able to acquire one of the large ones and have used it some. Like you, I am still getting used to it. Mostly around balancing the bigger lenses on it. So far I like it. It IS different from a gimbal (I have the mongoose 3.6) in so far as the chance for the finger pinch potential of most ball heads. But having to only use one head on trips is very nice. The customer service of the company is wonderful. I still need time in the field for any solid use opinion.

The customer service of the company is wonderful.
I said it was Erik, it was put through it's paces in SA last month and was superb, both the 200-400 & 500 with the 1DX's gave it no issues, almost 3 months on and it's still a major part of my kit, ideal for travelling where weight might be an issue.
