Red Grouse in flowering Heather

This is my first upload on this forum, so I'm hoping I've done it correctly. So here is a Red Grouse, photographed in flowering Heather.

Thanks for looking and thanks for any feedback given.

Hi Andy good to see you posting on here, the colours and the hue's make this for me, they really are spectacular ,nice sharp bird you could not ask for more.
Cheers Keith.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Keith. I have been lurking for quite a while and decided to join as a member tonight. The quality of the shots posted here is very high, so here's hoping I can keep up with you guys.
One thing I have noticed, is that I have lost a little off the right hand side of the image ( part of the copyright is missing ), so have I exceeded the required image size? ( image is 1024 across the longest side )

Andy I post 900 high and a max of 1200 wide , so think that your 1024 should be ok,but I'm sure the mods will help you with any problems, still a cracking image even with the bits that you point out missing.
Cheers Keith.

Hi Andy
Should be OK at 1200 across or 900 longest if upright.
Good to see you on here. You will find it can be a bit unlike some other sites. Real critique. You shouldn't have much trouble with your usual quality.
Cheers

Welcome to BPN mate. This isn't a site to get your ego stroked, but it will make you up your game!
That said, this is a very good version of the classic Grouse shot - great light, detail and composition.
On a personal note, how do you find the 1d3 / 500mm f4 combo? I have to make the choice soon between that and a 1d4 / 300mm f2.8 and converters combo

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the welcome.
As for the 1DMk3 + 500f4LIS, I find it a good combo, but my 1DMk3 only performs well in good light, in overcast conditions it is an absolute dog. That said, I tend to use my 7D as my main body and the 1DMk3 is normally used as a back up. It may seem strange to some that I would use the camera bodies in that order, preferring a Prosumer body over a Pro body, but I find the longer reach of the 7D useful for the more flighty species of bird.
Personally, I would never be without my 500f4LIS, it is the best lens I have used or owned for that matter. Either way, whether that be 500f4LIS or 300f2.8LIS, they will both produce superb images. But then I would rather have a 1DMk4 than a 1DMk3.

Welcome to BPN, Andy! Excellent first post! Love the colors, background, HA and oof flowers! The curve created by those flowers is very interesting. Looking forward to see more!

Great shot all around. The bird may be a bit soft... or could be a bit sharper

nice pose and display of environment with great colors. head is a bit soft however from motion blur, bumping the ISO for faster SS would have enabled you to get him sharp.

Hey Andy, welcome to BPN and thank you for the membership support! Excellent habitat you got here for the grouse, and I like the alert pose. As pointed out, the head seems soft, but otherwise a fine image.
As for the cut image, try using another skin...some monitors and settings are fussier with some and not others...

Thank you for the warm welcome, Daniel. Also, thanks for the advice re the skin, I'll give it a go.

Beautiful portrait, great details, a great shot.

Beautiful image of beautiful bird to start with. I like the color pallet, alert pose and composition.
