This image was created at Gatorland on the mostly cloudy afternoon of Saturday March 22. I used the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender (hand held with the internal TC engaged at 533mm) with the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop as framed: 1/125 sec. at f/6.3 in Av mode. AWB.

One row up and two sensors to the left of the central Sensor/AI Servo-Surround/Rear Focus AF just below the bird’s eye was active at the moment of exposure. Again, practicing so that you are able to change AF sensors almost instantly is an important skill to work on. Learn everything there is to know about the 1D X and 5D III AF systems including how to manage the various AF Area Selection Modes, when to use which one, and several ways to move the AF sensor around in my 1D X AF Guide and the 5D Mark III User’s Guide. A very striking portrait, Arthur. Feather detail is excellent, with just about every feather filament on display and the reflection in that beautiful red eye only adds to the image.

Beautiful shot as usual! The feather detail is fantastic but the clarity and color of the eye really makes it for me.

May be a dumb question but I assume 'as framed' means this is full frame and not cropped? What was the distance to the subject, 25ft - 30ft ?

Thanks. Yes, full frame and un-cropped. I'd say about 20 feet to the bird; I needed to move back and left in order to include the complete breeding plume. You can see three others on the blog post here.

Very nice portrait indeed. Many times I see photographers just content taking a few snaps of a cooperative bird and walk away, or taking the same image 100's of times without changing things up...nice to see a reminder once in a while.
