topaz noise reduction

Hello
I have a question about this plugin
If I make a selection of a bird (for example) and then use topaz reduce noise ...it is applied to the bird or to all the photo but no bird ?

I would think it should be applied to the selected area (the bird) so you would want to inverse the selection first. But I prefer to do it in a way I have more control over. I will make a duplicate layer if I just have a BG layer, or a composite layer on top of the stack if I already have some adjustment or other layers in addition to the BG, and do the noise reduction on it, and then mask where the noise reduction is not wanted. With Topaz I often find I don't need to mask out the bird -- it does a very good job of reducing noise in smoother BG areas without removing detail on the bird.
