    Default Reflection Before a Hunt

    Attached Images Attached Images

One of my objectives on the recent trip to Botswana was to take pictures of wildlife in its natural habitat. So, here is one of the early favorites.

    1DX
    24-70f4 II @ 39mm
    1/1600
    f8
    ISO-1600
    Handheld
    this is a full frame.

In retrospect, I could have shot at ISO-400. i had a 70-200 on and when I realized I could go wider, I was frantically swapped the lens and left the camera setting the same.

    Appreciate your comments.

    Thank you

    Loi

Nice one Loi - one can almost feel the tension as they're checking something out here. Probably making sure there's no croc waiting for them to come and have a drink?

It's perhaps just me but I'd bring the exposure down just a tad. Not much.

Love the perspective here and tells a great story Loi, was there any chance you could have got lower?
Agree with Tobie on the exp, so a good alternative is to run a lumo mask adj, which is what I've submitted here,
then ran a small amount of Nik CPL and 5% DE, as this just takes the overall brightness down and gives the image a bit more pop, boosting the sky and enhancing the reflection.
Might be a little too much but just to illustrate what can be done.

Hi Loi - nice scene and I don't mind at all that the dogs are looking away but getting a lower pov (probably accomplished by moving the vehicle further away) would have enhanced the feel of being one of the pack. Marc's tweaks have taken this in the right direction. I would burn the two dogs on the left a bit as their brightness draws the eye.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Marc, your RP looks great. I haven't used the Nik software for a long time and lost it when my previous computer crashed. I will look into getting a copy to try. Love the details you brought out in the sky and water.

Rachel, it would have been nicer to have a lower POV, but sadly I was on the 3rd row of the Land cruiser that day and the highest. The dogs went to the lake for just a short time and I just couldn't elbow my way to a lower position. Moving the vehicle wasn't an option.

    Thanks,

    Loi

    Hello Loi!

I like this very much, stunning scenery! Reading the comments about the POV I am just wondering-if you were able to get lower, what would the dogs look like? I could be wrong, but I think I could not wish for a better POV , I really like the perspective here...Marc's RP is spot on, great suggestions by Marc and Rachel. Love to see something different, well done Loi! What's next?

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

I like the wider scene here Loi! Marc's repost is a step in the right direction for sure, for my tastes I would go even a bit darker and punchier overall.
Do you have a frame with the LHS treetops included?

A good environment shot and I think the POV is OK because it gives depth and perspective. Agree the image could be given more pop one way or the other.

Hi Morkel, I found my own receipt of the Nik software, so will play with it using Marc's RP as a guide. Unfortunately, I do not have any frame with the LHS treetops included.

Marc, thanks again for the RP.

    Hi Loi

Lower POV would lose the sky.

Love the sky, Marc's RP brings much detail in blues, but too much on the yellow side.

Tried a different crop, and bringing down yellows a bit.

Two dogs on the left have burring necks, did not do different layer with mask..?

Love the moment and emotion captured.

    Andre

    Andre.

Hi Andre, I like your crop very much. I'm away from home, so can't comment on the colors. Will look into it this weekend. Thank you. Loi

Hi Everyone, thank you for your kind and helpful comments. I see it now my OP is way too bright and lacks the details in the sky and the the lake. So, I reduced the exposure and also experimented with the Nik Detail extractor (20% I think). I like the overall effect. As for the crop, I decided to leave as much of the sky in and cropped only slightly from the bottom. Thanks again. Loi
