I wanted to save this for Mother's Day but decided to try it in black and white instead. This is a mother Mule Deer and her fawn in Wyoming.

    Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM + 1.4x III

Photographed from beanbag on car window in the rain.

    Aperture Priority

    ISO 1600 | f/5.6 | 1/200s | -1 ev

Post-processing: minor cropping, selective saturation and sharpening, levels and exposure adjustment

I did a square crop because like Morkel's lion image I thought the deer heads formed a triangle and i think it just works better.

For black and white I opened the original .tif file and did a Image Adjustment ; Color Balance until it looked OK. I don't know enough about mid-tones and how to do those but I will try learning it. Ive been really busy with school and sorry I haven't been on here in awhile and now Im up too late!

    Thanks for looking, ashleigh

Sweet moment Ashleigh... I like the crop, I think I would lighten the near side deer's eye just a little. ( ps what do you call a deer with no eyes... I have no idea..). I am still working on my B&W skill so not sure what to suggest here with respect to tones, my guess its a bit flat or all too similar.. lets see what others think.

Hi Ashleigh - A very tender moment. The conversion works and you've got nice detail. I agree with your self-assessment that it could use a bit more variation in the midtones for some more pop. Good sharpness despite a slow ss. I would burn the mother's ear a little because it is the brightest area and draws the eye.

    Rachel

    Dear Ashleigh,

What a wonderful tender moment you have captured here and you gave this image such an appropriate title-great work!
Crop is just perfect, the sharpness is there where it counts - don't you think that by not sharpening too much you are actually emphasising the softness of the moment captured? I love what you did and your thinking behind this image, great advice from Rachel above and my congratulations to you-very original and I love to see you are also contributing to the April Theme!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Ashleigh

    For me the crop works.

The throat area of the fawn looks like there was a bit of movement (1/200?) but the head is sharp? Maybe she was swallowing?

Do not know the secret of mid tones yet, burned and dodged with Tony Kuyper's D&B layer to give the highlights and darks more contrast. Did my own lumi layer to lighten eye and muzzles.

    WDYT?

    Andre

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Andre I like your repost very much and I'll try to fix the contrast more. Thanks again, Ashleigh

    A very tender moment here!
I like the framing a lot, and prefer Andre's repost for it's lighter tone with more midtone detail and contrast.
