I'm not usually a fan of oof birds in the background. But for some reason this one intrigued me. I'm curious to know if it appeals to anyone. From the Great Swamp NWR a few weeks ago.

Bill, the colors of the foreground mallard are beautiful. Very sharp, and well exposed. And, I really like the glassy look of the water. For me, the OOF female in the BG would work better if it was headed in the same direction as the foreground mallard, and there were no convergences between the two. As it is, my eyes bounce back and forth between the two. I'd also suggest removal of the two red objects in the BG.
I like the male but the OOF female doesn't work IMO. BG was a bit busy here too. not your best shot if you ask me

Excellent exp and detail on the drake Bill and nice that you picked up the irredesnce on the head. I like the hen in the background mostly because of her curious pose.
Hi Bill The male is really well captured and is perfect. I think the OOF female would work if it did not intersect the males head. I also find my eye drawn to the dark shape on the females bill.

Thanks everyone for your honest critique. I agree with all said. Iain, the dark spot on the hen's bill is typical of the species.
