I thought I would put this in to show how a background with stuff in it can work sometimes. I think so anyway
One from today at my little pool. They seem to be paired up now.
I tried a selective background blut as opposed to neat image. WDYT ?

John, I am with you. I like to see the "home" of the bird sometimes, and this shows off well. True sometimes BG elements can be distracting, but I like this beautiful bird in its home! Thanks....

A very nice shot, in an environment not photographed with a Goldfinch. I might be tempted to lose a little off the left of the frame as the head turn makes some of this side a bit redundant, and most of the background interest is on the right

John, the photos you manage to conjure up from your own back yard are incredible. An example to all of us that you do not need to spend a lot of dosh travelling around the world to get great photos. Thank you for the constant inspiration.

    Hi John

Nice to see you back at your pool again. This is an unusual setting for a Goldfinch and I really like it. Great detail on the bird and the colours look natural.
I agree with maybe taking a little off the left.

John, There are three background elements that to my eye are less than ideal. One is the stick in front of the bird's left foot on his perch, another is the bright thing Upper right corner as viewed and the last is the branch coming into the frame from the left side. All draw my attention away from the bird. Otherwise, I agree with you that a background with some elements can work. The image is nicely exposed and sharp and well processed.

Agree with Martin, your back yard images are spectacular ones. This one is not exceptional. I would have preferred BG without blur b/c, your BG,FG and perch gives very nice 3D effect to the frame.
Finch has as usual given you very nice pose, nice HA, beautiful colours, details and composition. Love it.

    Regards,
    Satish.

The bird rocks IQ wise and pose wise.
I would take a bit off the left and tone down the bright yellowy-orange thing in the RUC. Once you do that, then I agree that some busier BG's work!!

Hi John, good look back pose, and you have brought out the colours on the finch nicely. Good DOF on the finch, and there are two elements I would change. Take a touch off the bottom to just below the log/perch, and blend in the orange leaf URC.

Like it, for some reason with these guys, a lot of shots don't have much detail, yours is quite nice, the bg looks very nice to me, Grand job.

Here's a repost with all the suggestions taken care of. I worry to be honest about doing this as - as I feel almost like I have created an image quite different from the one I took. !

The repost is very pleasing. My suggestion is, since it's a controlled situation, get rid of those elements before you press the shutter button.

    Thanks all
Grace Sorry- not that simple I,m affraid.
Not a set up as such. The hide and pool have been there over 30 years. A lot of the backdrops are plants growing to hide the stone back wall.. I do obviously check stuff before I get into the hide at the start of the session> However - then things happen. It can be Squirrels, Rabbits, large birds and even labradors from dog walkers nearby. That usually wrecks any background you may have" set up" . Then as the light changes( and this is the worst bit,) the highlights on anything in the background change constantly as the sun and cloud etc changes.. There is no way to deal with that. You cannot keep getting out of the hide to re arrange things,You just don't do that. When you have sat there for half an hour waiting for things to settle. Do it and you can forget any photography for the day or even much longer.. So you have to put up with any alterations to your " perfect background "
    Cheers
