I'm going to buy a 1.4 TC for use with my D300 and D3 bodies. Popular question I guess, should it be Nikon for approximately $400 or should I just buy a Kenko for $128 on ebay. It will be used with a 300 F4 AFS. I used a Sigma 1.4 with my Canon and was well satisfied until I tried the Canon one, there was (is) a big difference at least with my gear. Also, is the 1.7 capable of anything other than static shooting of wildlife? Thanks for any responses.
Gene, I use the Nikon 1.7 with my 300/F4 lens and it works very well. There is some loss of AF ability in low light (dusk), but no other issues. I bought mine from Adorama and went with the grey market one ~$350. How much can go wrong on a TC?
I'd suggest getting the Nikons, as you will hopefully have them a long time and use them on future lenses. I agree with Robert about a slight loss of AF and sharpness, but I find the 1.7 very usuable on the 300 2.8 and 400 2.8.
You can find excellent used TC 1.4 X and TC 1.4 X II for the same or less cost than new gray market and you won't have any hassles from Nikon if for some reason it needs factory service. By the way the only difference in the TC and TC II issues is cosmetic, electronics, optics and mechanicals are identical.
I purchased a 1.4 used from someone on another site (they actually posted in this thread, thanks by the way). Excellent condition for $260, with no complaints. Heck I couldnt play this game if I didnt buy some of my equipment used, I have saved a lot of money that way. just a thought
