I was at Gatorland a few weeks ago. It was around 9.30am and the light was pretty high (as you could see from the shadow) and harsh. I decided to test the 200-400L with the external combo to see what kind of IQ I could get. With it attached and the internal one turned on, I stopped down to f/10. At the FL of 681mm, this is the image I got. I added some fill flash to even out the harsh shadow. I was quite happy with the out of camera IQ from this combo.
    1Dx, 200-400L + internal 1.4TC + external 1.4TC, fill flash, manual on tripod.

I love it, Troy! Perfect focus and the bright whites well handled. Perfect title!

I'd be tempted to lower the image just 0.5" or so (or zoom out just a tad if it's getting too tight at the bottom) to fit the full crown into the picture (since that's the main attraction of the image). I'm actually surprised that a small portion of the crown lacked focus at f/10! Great pic - well done!

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I cropped the top part in camera, that's a mistake on my part to zoom in too tight. Thank you.

Hi Troy, excellent work on the whites, and you have captured the raised crest display very well. The 200-400 is a great lens isnt it. I havent used it with an external 1.4TC, but looking at this, and an image posted by Artie shows you dont lose IQ.

Ha! Looks like a dust sweeper :-) Good exposure, details, BG. I suppose including the full 'do would have been cool, but it works as is too. I do wish the eye was lit by the sun though but the pose makes up for it.

I like the IQ, hairdo, exposure and BG. I too wish you had more on top. Excellent image Troy.

Looks pretty good for a 'stacked' TC frame! You did a good job of minimizing the shadows with your use of fill flash. I think you've got room to push the exposure a little more to the right, as your whites aren't looking as white as they should (at least on my monitor). Enjoyed shooting with you in Florida!

Don King is right! I dont mind the top cropped as it is a tight closup. The whites look great to me and I think the flash really helped here, good call.

It was very nice meeting you and shooting together. Hope to see you next year. Take care.

Wonderful close up. The details in the white plumage and the eye contact are great. The green BG fits wonderful to the bird.
