This is my first post on this forum and I look forward to share more of my work. I photographed this Killdeer on an overcast day in Terrenceville NL. Killdeers are not common to NL so I was lucky to find this little guy. I spent a few days with him and came way with some great images. Welcome to BPN! You'll find some of the best (and honest) critiques for bird images on this forum.
Must have been a treat to get an image like this, especially for a non-native/common bird to your area. The perspective here is nice, really helping to isolate the killdeer from the rest of the image.
I like the size of the bird in the frame, but could see a version with less room on the bottom (maybe more of a pano crop?).
Lovely dreamy effect here, I love the low angle, and the horizon line just below the subject is very appealing with grasses peeking up here and there. Excellent background too. Well exposed and well processed. I agree a bit less at bottom would work well as there seems to be lots of canvas down there but if you crop there and retain the ratio that means losing some neat vegetation at left (unless you pull off some digital magic and move them right pre-crop, if within your processing ethics).
You're off to a great start...looking forward to more from you...and don't be shy to critique others' works too :-)
Hi Brad,
I was wondering when you would wander over to BPN! I have seen your fabulous images on NSN.
I really like this. The color palette is what really appeals to me. Layered BG is lovely. The soft overcast light was your friend for this shot.
IQ is excellent.
The soft OOF grasses punctuated by the sharper flowers are very pleasing to the eye.
I think I would take about 5% off the bottom and 3% off the LHS but composition is a very personal taste issue so take that with a grain of salt.
Looking forward to your participation,
