Last July had this visitor for a week or two at a local river. Each time I prepared to capture it taking off, waiting for hours, I don't recall seeing one. Removed several distracting branches in CS6. All C&C welcome.

    Hello,

i like it very much. It seems that you had no sunlight, but it also seems so, that it was not necessary.
A sharp and clear image from an interessting bird !

    Greetings Eric

Hi Geoffrey, I like the concentrated 'fishing' pose, and overall well exposed. Although the BG is a touch busy, it works for me, as the heron is separated far enough away, and it is in his enviroment. Comp wise, Im finding it a bit too squarish for me. As you have already cut off some of the branch lower middle, I would take at least half off the bottom, and a touch off the top. That will create more of a horizontal comp.

    This is very nice.
I would take a bit off the bottom to get more of a landscape feel to the image.
Bird looks nice and silky and your exposure is spot on.
PP work looks good as well,
    Gail

    Very nice image Geoffrey
I agree on more of a landscape crop but also find the perch interesting.

Excellent image. Well exposed.Nice in it's habitat.I like the 3D effect. Agree about composition with Stuart Sir and Gail.
Though common bird here, still I do not have good image so far. Well done.

What could be better than a true to life capture like this one. Nice easy light, good pose, detail and color. Lovely habitat.

Geoffrey, I usual don't care so much for images with such a busy background, but this one strikes me differently. It's a nice shot of a heron in its environment, and the interesting downed branches which serve at a perch provide a nice anchor for the image. The sharp focus on the heron really helps it stand out from the background.
