    Default Red-necked Grebe Behavior

I photographed this Red-necked Grebe on 3-15-2014 in NE Ohio. Is this a courtship display or is it just "stretching"? It was the only RNGR in the area. Thanks.

Without a potential mate nearby, I would doubt that it's courting behavior....and they nest further north. Even tho they are divers (and I'm comparing them to the Loons I see up here) ... they still seem to bathe, preen and "fuss around" quite often on top of the water.

Thanks Sandy, I was also sceptical that it was courtship behavior but it didn't do any sort of preening, fluttering or diving before or after this shot, it just went into this position held it for a few seconds then went back to swimming around, just thought it was odd behavior. Guess it's the equivalent of us stretching in the morning when we get out of bed.

Hi Jim... yep, I think they also need some "strechersizes" too! As long as he seemed happy, pretty sure it's normal! Great capture!
