Default Another day at the rookery

Got this one this morning at the local rookery. Clearing fog left some very subtle lighter areas in the sky.

Canon 5D Mk III, 300mm f/2.8 IS + 1.4X III. Hand held. ISO 800, f/6.7, 1/2000 sec. Full frame -- except that I took a little off the left and added the same amount to the right -- about 15% of the width. Basic LR adjustments then to PS CS6 for a head transplant. The neck and head were sharper in the next frame (what passes for high speed burst in the 5D3) so I replaced it from the lower neck up. Hardly enough difference to show here but I'm a pixel peeper. Then a touch of detail extractor.

Diane, you're making me miss FL all too much!

The shadows on the far wing aren't ideal, but you were still able to get detail throughout. I wouldn't have been able to pick out the head swap, so thanks for sharing that with us.

Very nice, Diane! I couldn't have guesed you swapped heads. I'm seeing some sort of artifact on the viewer's right (particularly the bottom half of the image) - possibly from when you added the real-estate?

Hi Diane, I quite like the flight pose with the spread wings, and Im fine with the shadows on the wings - they arent that distracting. Whites well exposed, and a great job with replacing the head. The nesting material a bonus.

Great shot! I agree with the comments above. In addition, I would like to see a bit more room at the top for the bird to fly into.

Thanks everyone! Ian, thanks for catching another of my too-frequent glitches -- I was cloning to smooth out some odd texture in the sky (origin uncertain) and I let the source bump into the edge without noticing. Fixed now!

Raymond, would be easy to add a little more at the top -- will have a look at that. And Miguel, I'll have a try at darkening the lighter areas on the left wing --might not be hard to do....

Nice full frame capture, Diane. I love the feather details and play of the shadow on the wings. Nicely done.

Fantastic Diane! I can't pick out the head swap.... superb detail right down to the long white plumes coming off the back to the feet!
did see the vertical lines on the right side of the BG (but that's already been mentioned.) Nesting material is perfect!

Thanks! I've been sloppy about backgrounds in my last two but I'd never post a head swap that even I could detect! I align the new one on a separate layer and click it on and off to be certain the transition is perfect as I mask (and check it in Difference mode). It's at the middle of the narrow portion of the neck.

Diane, late to the party-not much to add though I too would never have caught the head swap.

Thanks Randall. It was virtually the same head position, taken in the next frame of a burst, just a little sharper than the original head. But in that second frame the wings weren't in as pleasing a position.
