    Default camera and lens protection

I am looking at buying something to protect lens / camera from the elements and knocks.

There are bags which cover the whole camera and lens - these are camo and waterproof.
You can also get a lens cover - this is a camo cover that goes over the lens in strips and leaves the operating bits accessible.
Does not cover the camera and is obviously per lens - I have 2 expensive lenses that I would get these for.

What do people do? Is it worth getting both or do I only need one of these?
    What do other people do?

    Any input appreciated.

Sue, you don't specify your lens and body, but since you're posting on a bird photography forum, I'll assume that your talking about super-telephoto lenses and I'm guessing that you're talking about something called "Lens Coating" to cover and protect these large lenses. It is, indeed, very protective and will minimize scratches and stuff.

Outdoor Photo Gear is an advertiser on this site and here's a link to their gear protection pages. There are a number of cases and on the second page you'll see Lens Coat:

One or two other advertisers here sell similar stuff.

Sue, for lenses, Lens coat is perhaps your best bet. All my Prime lenses 500, 200-400, 300 are all covered and protects them well. As they are neoprene they are easy to fit & remove, compared to the days where people used camo tape!!!! You specify the make & lens, Lens coat will have it.

Contact Wex photographic, they have the best selection.

    Funny you post this.

Just got my lens back from LensCoat. .

I'm not affiliated with them or did I have any of their products. Scott from lenscoat contacted me last week and asked if would be interested in having my lens be the model LOL for a LensCoat? I said sure why not. So it just came back and I'm very happy with its new coat. Fits well and seems like it will offer protection from the banging around that a lens will encounter in the great outdoors. He also sent me one for my 400L 5.6 and a TravelCoat for my Tamron. (its a cover that goes over the lens when not in use) I have included a few pics. All three items were freebies and I was not expecting a cover for my 400L 5.6 but he threw it in the box anyway! Great quality and stitched very well. My wife was impressed.

The extra piece that's shown is for if you want to remove the tripod collar. Seems like a inexpensive solution to offer protection for your lens.

L lenses are water proof if used on a pro body, no protection is really needed unless the rain is very heavy. You can also get a rain cover for heavy rain...

I got my lens coat from www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk for both my 300mm f4 and 300mm f2.8 lenses. Superb quality and really nice camo.

    All the best

Just an update - I bought the camo cover from Wildlife Watching Supplies which is fine but seems quite expensive with P&P although just looked at some others now and they all seem about the same price.
Anyway, there are a number of pieces of camo cover which are thick and elastic (neoprene). They are sewn together so that you have to pull each bit up over your lens and it would be a pain to take off.
The most important controls have been left open but some of the others would be covered and although you would not use them much I left some of these areas uncovered.
You can use these camo rings on other lenses though.
The lens does have camouflage now and it is protected in part with a spongy layer.

I bought a very inexpensive waterproof cover through Amazon - £10. It is great for 100 to 400 lens etc but does not fit my big lenses, which is fine I think as you cannot have one size for all combinations.
I bought a large camo waterproof cover from OutdoorPhotographyGear.co.uk It fits my big lenses and was very reasonable priced.

Think I am OK for now - Hope this helps others.
    Thanks again Sue
