It is truly amazing to watch these owls come from a football field away, pump their wings a few times, then glide inches above the snow as they close in on their prey. This owl was fed live mice by me as part of the image making process. The image was made in Northern Minnesota. Canon7d, Sigma50/500os, iso800, 1/3200, f9, small crop, resize, USM. Comments and critiques welcome.
    Regards,
    Shawn Zierman.

Lovely, Shawn. Exposure looks good, and I love the feeling of this bulky mass just floating above the snow. Just wish the second eye were a bit more visible.

    IQ and exposure are excellent.
I love how " in your face" this picture is. I can feel him gliding low and silently.
I also really like the specular highlights in the snow. Often, they distract but in this image they are like little diamonds in the snow.
    Whites are perfect.
I just wish for a bit more of a visible left eye (minor issue)

I like the sharpness, exposure control, low angle, highlights in snow and flight height. I don't mind the limited visibility of the left eye in this image. Very well done Shawn!

Love everything about this image! those yellow eyes are so nice! Excellent exposure and details. I would just suggest to lighten the image a bit.

Good details in the white and nice cropping/framing. I really like that low POV. The exposure/brightness looks fine on my calibrated screen, and I don't mind the lack of left eye because that's the way it is at this angle.

About a fingers width is the space between. Killer shot Shawn with great exposure control and nice feather detail. The concentrated stare as it comes in for the pounce is riveting.
The glistening snow is a strong part of this sweet image for me. Very nice

Great incoming shot, Shawn. Love the eye contact and the super low angle.

It always impresses me, too, when they glide so close to the ground for so long without flapping their wings...they look so light when they do so. Perfect techs, lovely whites, and I'm with Gail in regards to the neat specular highlights in the snow.
