This was taken in Costa Rica near a feeder. This woodpecker wouldn't give me the head angle I wanted but I'm still happy with this image as it shows the red on the heads well. All C&Cs are welcome and appreciated.

Very nicely composed image, Jim. I see your point about the HA, but I like the inquisitive look on the bird - it definitely works for me. Perfect exposure and nice, rich BG. TFS.
Beautiful shot! Nicely composed! I love the smoothing background and its colour! I also wish the head angle is better, but again, it is what it is...birds never cooperate sometimes.
I can see why you chose this head angle, which is something i have to decide when choosing mine. To show more eye contact you give up the dramatic top colors. Adding a catchlight in the eye would help here.
What a cool looking WP with lots of nice contrasting colors. The techs look great and I like the perch and the BG. A unique pose and it shows the head colors well. I agree that adding a little catch would add to this nice capture. Nice work Jim
That is one gorgeous looking woodpecker! I think the head angle works well showing the crown like it does, and the eye still shows nicely. I like the bark texture and tones. Composition is perfect as far as visually balancing the tree, bird, and bg.
Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. I agree with adding a catchlight.
Gail sometimes I think they run out of names for some species! Since red-bellied, red-headed and gold-fronted were already taken they came up with black-cheeked.

Very nice one Jim!
I agree about the head angle but that's a natural pose that birds give sometimes so it's ok for me. This is such a healthy male and with nice pose, BG and light. Agree with Alan regarding the catchlight, may be just brighten the one on the upper part of the eye.
