    Default Hippo Head Shot

I think the intro of "the theme" motivated people to go look for old photos. It for sure had that effect in me.

Taken last Summer in Tarangire NP as we crossed a low bridge in the afternoon. The hippo and the river were in complete shade.

I cropped tight since there were distracting reflection off the water on the right hand side.

    Thank you for your comments.

Hi Loi, glad the introduction of the 'Themes' is provoking people not only to post, but also to review older images too.

Like the frame filler on this and the body angle of the hippo. Again, nice low eye level POV which helps, IMHO to connect with the viewer. PP is looking good too, although I might have selectively darkened the FG water a bit more.

Wow! Awesome image and POV! Great detail in the face & on the skin. I think it was good your hippo was all in shade or you would have been fighting glare on the wet parts.

Hi Loi - great low pov and nice job on the pp. Good suggestion by Steve, there's also a spot right above the hippo's left ear (right as we look at the image). I agree with Anette on reducing the blues. Did you add the catchlight?

    Rachel

Awesome detail and low point of view Loi. Really liking this one.
I'd maybe run another round of NR on the upper and left hand side water area and maybe darken those areas ever so slightly.

Hi Everyone, thank you very much for your helpful comments.

Steve, good idea regarding darkening the FG.

Anette and Rachel, great call on the blues. I'm just not good at spotting this type of color cast!

Rachel, I didn't add the catch eye. In fact I almost missed seeing that there was a catch light. Now that I saw it, I decided to brighten both eyes just a tad using Curves.

Also got rid of the dust bunny, thank you Rachel.

I'm happy with the image now. Thanks again.

Hard to believe I will be back in Africa in 2 1/2 weeks.

Cracking closeup here Loi! Repost colour and vibrance does it for me. Perhaps needed a hint more DOF for the tip of the nose to be in focus?

Loi, with the updated LR, DB's are a thing of the past.

Thnak you Morkel. Yes, a little bit more DOF would have been better. Will go for f8 next time. Loi

Yep, it's awesome! Great detail and colours and sharpness for 1/250s and a big crop, you've really nailed this one! Congratulations Loi!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
