The New Zealand Takahe was thought to be extinct till 1948 when re-discovered.
This bird was part of a couple brought to our local wildlife reserve and then surprisingly in November 2013 surprised and thrilled wildlife staff by producing an egg which hatched normally and produced a chick which is now as big as the adults.
    Details: Pentax K30 with Tamron 70-300 @ 133MM.
    1/4000 @ F5.6 800 ISO Minus 1/3 EV. Multi segment metering.
    Partial crop.

You did a great job getting nice and low to get on the same plane with your subject, and you have a nice angle on your bird as well. Too bad you had the whitish rock behind him which is a bit distracting, but the grasses work well. I wonder whether this might have been a large crop b/c I am seeing some issues with the quality of your image in the very foreground (FG) and in the upper left BG.

Awesome Ian. Thanks for sharing. Looks quite similar to the purple swamphen we get in South Africa. TFS

    Ian,
After reading a narration about history of the bird, I like the re post with all habitat, natural as well as man made.It can take some noise reduction.
Beautiful bird, very similar to our Purple Moorhen, although there some color changes.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Thanks Satish. After doing the repost I realised that the original is a bit more interesting!
