Using Live View and manual focus, I was able to very carefully chose my focus. Did the usual PS stuff, then expanded the canvas for a thin frame. I filled that using content aware and a subtle application from PS filter gallery.

Besides the colors (I really like the pinkish/purplish and where it is in relation to the foreground), I think this works so well because of the progressive change in focus. It's a much different look from an out-of-focus background that's far enough behind the subject that there are essentially two degrees of focus. Your concept for the frame is very clever and effective. Masking off the stem temporarily before doing the Content Aware fill would've eliminated that strong green diagonal.

Hi, Nancy, I like the point of focus and the dreamy colors. The beveled framing is nice

Interesting approach, I particularly like how the focus doesn't appear to be on one spot even though it is, the varying height of the flower heads creates the illusion. I also find the frame and how it was created interesting-the way it interacts with the base image introduces the look of beveled glass.

Edit: I wonder if using a low to medium opacity soft light mode (or another lighten variation) layer on the extension would enhance the effect?

A very good example of selective focus Nancy. I also like the curved line of the blooms that are in focus, and the dreamy quality of the rest of the image. Nice work!

I got a good chuckle out of "the usual PS stuff" in THIS forum!!

I really like the frame and the selective focus.

If I'm sounding rushed, I am... Will try to post something soon with an excuse.

This image makes me think of a beveled mirror and the flower looking at itself in it. Maybe a strange thought, but that's mostly what I have in my head anyway. I like how the focus seems to meander along that one line of blooms and the subtle colors of the image.

Thanks all! Dennis, I think I'm going to work on that slanted bit of stem in the frame.

I use Live View and manual focus for 90% of my flower photos. Outstanding selective focus! (More later, I have to go)

Unlike others on this list, I'm not thrilled with the beveled edge. I think it distracts from the beautiful flower and your excellent selective focus.

Anita, I played with & without a frame. I could go either way. Thanks for suggesting an alternative.
