I had just been out hand holding the 500mm whilst walking Barney, after a couple of hours I came back and had a sit down on the porch and got this little chap as he flew toward the feeder.

Hi Jon, these little guys arent easy to catch in flight, so you have done well to lock focus hand holding your 500, and getting him square in the frame - maybe too square. Great show of the raised near wing, and he pops nicely against your smooth BG. As mentioned, maybe moving him back to the left a touch will work better.

Great detail and wing position on the front wing . Wish for better wing in the back. Nice light and color too

Stu - I wish!! I was sat down suppin' a cup of tea and munchin' on some home made biscuits, I was using a cable release - camera on tripod.

Pretty neat overall, love the near wing and a beaty BG. For sure I'd crop left and bottom to improve the comp, and bad luck this fella has no tail...

I was sooo... impressed that you got this image hand holding!! However, I am glad you are a mere mortal like the rest of us and used a tripod.
The only thing I would have done differently is have a glass of wine and crackers instead of tea and biscuits!! ( depending on the time of day of course!)
I would take a bit off the left and top since he is landing.
    A terrific BG as well.
I do wish for a better far wing position but that is getting very picky.
    Well done John!

Great to be able to capture one in flight, Jon. Looks sharp and the close wing has excellent details.

Looks very good Jonathan, agree about the composition, give yourself a pat on the back for this one.

Thanks very much everyone, I will be trying again as soon as we get some light. The low grey clouds have returned so it looks as if it may be some time.
