I came across this prehistoric-looking fellow on a trip to Belize last week. A new species for me. C&C appreciated.

Nice, Bill. Good subject, background, perch, pose, eye contact, and sharpness. If it were mine, I might try to selectively increase the contrast/saturation of the tree on which the bird is perched. The brilliance of the bird to my eye is much stronger than the subdued colors of the tree. I 'd try to reduce the contrast between bird and tree a little, although others might well not agree.

Terrific image and WP!!! Love the way he is angled toward you. I might consider a little off of the top and adding some at the bottom if you have it.

Hi Bill, nice soft BKG that separates the subject well and great to have no distracting elements too. looks like swell used hole. The red head is quite striking, juxtapose to the more subdued plumage. I think it could stand a little off the top.

Great shot bill.. It's got what I might describe as an industrial styled head...built for business, not for posing with.. Light was harsh obviously..

Great capture Bill, I like everything about it. I was working on a Pileated Woodpecker today, this one is so similar with more red on the head. Welcome back from Belize.

Love the IQ on this great looking Woodpecker under some pretty harsh light. Beautiful BG too. Welcome home.

Prehistoric yes-were you in the Jurassic time warp. He looks like a wise bird, ready to survive another day. Excellent colours.

Crazy looking bird. I find this image to be full of interest, between the bird and the tree and the hole. Harsh light handled well.

    Bill,

I like the composition of this one and I've yet to capture one myself (so extra points for that!)

The image looks like it could use just a tad more sharpening. Here is what I was thinking ...

Thank you Miguel. The body definitely looks better. Out of curiosity, what USM settings did you use (or did you do selective sharpening)?

Thank you everyone for your comments. It was a treat to see this unique bird. You're probably right about a little too much room at the top. I was trying to put the eye at the ROT, but a little trimming might be in order. Thanks for the suggestion.

Great looking shot Bill. I like the pose and the BG on this unique capture. I thought it looked a little soft too so Miguel repost looks better.
    Nice work
