    Default Yellow-shafted Flicker

After waiting for some time on the edge of a local river where Common Mergansers congregate this time of year, and not having much luck getting them close in, I returned to my car. As I was packing my gear away I saw two Northern Flickers fly into a tree a few yards away. Found they were dining on dried poison ivy berries. Put my lens and camera together quickly, HH getting close enough to capture this without time to check settings and off they went. Later realized not only had I gotten a close image, but a Yellow-shafted also.

    D3s, Nikon 500mm + 1.4 tc, 1/400, f5.6, ISO 1250, Gitzo series 5 tripod, Wimberley Gimbal Head.

    Hi Geoffrey

Beautiful bird and I'm glad you got your chance to photograph it. Nothing beats wanting an image for a long time and then getting your chance.. IMHO the pose is good and you got in nice and close but the IQ is soft and I am not sure why. In your story you say its hand held but then you list a tripod and Wimberley head in your equipment list, so I am not sure what you used.. The image softness might be expected if HH @ 1/400 sec but not really expected with a tripod..

Don my mistake. Thanks for the compliments and pointing this out. I'm so used to writing tripod in the equipment list I added it inadvertently.

Really loving this bird against the white BG. Agree it looks a little soft. I would have liked to see more feather details. It looks as though the bird may have been moving when you snapped.

Thanks Marina. More than likely the combo of being HH and the bird moving, created motion blur. I went back into Cs6 and worked with smart sharpen angle degree. Brightened and added bit of contrast. In Nik used a small amount of detail extractor. Not sure if it's much of a rescue.
