Strategies for rainy / humid environments
I'm gearing up for a trip to PNG this summer and expect a range of conditions from tropical to balmy to rainy. I am curious what strategies / gear people use in similar conditions? I shoot with a 7D, 100-400 IS lens, 580EXii with Better Beamer. I am currently planning on using the Cotton carrier - but could also think about a different carrier - like BlackRapid - if there is a combination set-up that covers you and the camera. Do people have Poncho's or other rain gear they like that also covers the camera? Do you use a separate camera shroud? (Yes I will have a tripod too, but likely will have a spotting scope on it - switching back and forth with quick release mounts). I am planning on bringing some silica gel packets. What other approaches do people use?

I have no idea what or where PNG is, but I've shot in swamps during the rain using a 7D. I'd recommend a rain coat for the camera and lens. That push-pull lens is prone to leak and the 7D is not waterproof. If you're staying in an air-conditioned room, then keep the camera and lens where it will not get cooled too much below the outside temperature, or you'll fight fogged lens for a while after you go out. The silica gel is excellent, if you dry everything with towels and then store them loosely your camera bags, where they will not get cooled to much.
I'd hand hold that lens, assuming there's enough light to shoot at ISO 800 at a shutter speed of 1/500-sec. or higher.
