This year I decided to stay locally and "work" the swamps in my county(Marion,SC). Gas was one factor ,and another was me realizing every spring I was trasping all over the country and never really looking locally.
I have been surprised with breeding Southern warbler numbers(Hooded,Kentucky, Prothon,Parula,Yellow-throated,Ovenbird,Swainson's). I have been especially pleased with locating numerous singing Swainsons Warblers, which have all ways eluded me in migratory hotspots. Also numerous other small bird breeders but alas can not find a Bachman's Sparrow locally.
I have attached a singing Kentucky Warbler in breeding plumage with nice bright legs.
Hey Chas, Great to see you here. What (noisy) camera did you use for this one, i.e, please post the specs. Wonderful image of a real skulker. Are you/did you use a tape? I love the perch and the pose and the singing. Could use a bit more head turn towards you and a lot less noise... Love to Joyce.

This is one of those "holy grail" warblers up here. Nice portrayal of the bird's overall look, colour scheme, and a great capture of the singing behaviour. I think the image is suffering from a couple of ailments that could be corrected. It looks like areas of the image such as the eye and black mask were underexposed and then brightened up, creating noise in the dark areas. The other issue could be jpeg compression. BPN now allows close to 200 k images so you could have saved this one with a lot less compression, which might improve the detail.
Thanks for the input on the image.
Hi Art,my "old" noisy camera ,the Canon Mark II is still going. Just cant swing the Mark III yet although I'm tempted especially for dirt specs and noise.

I do not use tape, HOWEVER have discovered the convenience of the I Pod. This has really helped especially in thick vegetation in swamps. I have not seen a single birder in my area for 4 weeks, so intermittant calling is not an issue.
I will have to start taking noise in account in my workflow- It is one of those things I keep putting on the back burner, but comments will make me start to look closer. Ill tell Joyce you asked and everyone in clan is doing well.
