Default News on Kennedy Space Center for February 2014

A heads up, for those interested in visiting KSC in the near future. I was looking for information, for a friend who is here on vacation, and found out that both of the good tours at Kennedy Space Center are being discontinued this month. Feb 23, 2014, is the last day for the KSC Up-Close Launch Pad Tour and the Up-Close VAB Tour. They have offered them as a lumped together Mega tour for the duration, this month. They are still available separately, but the Mega tour is only 1/2 hour longer than the longer individual tour takes. Just in case you were planning to visit there soon.

    Follow-up to the above.

We took the tour on Wednesday and it was very interesting, should anyone wish to go before it ends.

Having been regular visitors to KSC when we lived on the east coast, it was interesting to note the many changes in the last four years since we were there. There are a lot more exhibits and buildings to tour.

As for the Mega Tour, we got to go to the 39A launch pad, from which most of the Apollo and Shuttle launches took off. It was the first time in 30 years that the public has been allowed to access the area and stand on the pad. It will soon be abandoned by NASA and dismantled by a private firm who will build a new launch facility for their use.

We also toured the inside of the VAB building, which I have not been in since my first tour in the '60s. Other tours we took did not have access to it.

The closing of these areas is due to the changes in NASA's program and the shared use of facilities by private industries who will be launching from the site. What the future tours will include will be determined, but the history of the Apollo and Shuttle program will not be the same for future visitors.

If you are in the area and get a chance to visit, it is well worth the time and money to take the tour. You will learn a lot that was not on the news, about the space program and KSC.
