    Default American Tree Sparrow

I just got my new "bird camera", the Canon 1DX. To check it I took it for a walk through the restored prairies at the Prairie Garden Trust this afternoon. In a low-lying wet area I came across a small flock of American Tree Sparrows.
This is a full frame shot of the this small bird.

This brief outing reinforced the impression I got with a loaner 1DX a few weeks ago; the focus seems to snap instantly on the subject. Very useful for bird shots!

Any comments or suggestions about how I could improve would be welcome!

    Henry,

Congrats on the new camera! Only thing I would consider changing on this one is removing the tiniest of second catchlights.

It looks like it's not a 3:2 crop, so it almost full frame?

Hi Henry, lovely pose, and I like the smallish diagonal perch through the frame. Light looks good, tack sharp where it counts, and the colour in the BG compliments the sparrow nicely.

    Congrats on your new toy.

Good observation! I crop all my horizontal images to fit an aspect ratio of 30 x 18.5. This one is still full frame because I extended the left side of the canvas using content-aware fill in Photoshop.

Congrats on the new toy Henry! I like the bird's erect posture and slightly raised head feathers. Nice earthy tones throughout. I do wish for a slightly better head angle though (I realize it is parallel to the sensor as is, but a couple degrees more towards us would have been super), but not even a 1DX can help with that after the fact
