    Default East African Crowned Crane

Image taken last Summer. Wish the head angle were a little towards me, but that was not the case here. Overall just a bit tight, took off just a sliver on top and left for comp.

I was photographing some far away birds when our guide spotted this crane nearby. No time for switching out the 2X

    Appreciate your comments.

Hello Loi,you are right it is certainly filling the frame but it does show all the nice detail on this bird, leg up pose really adds to the image, very nice!

    Hi Loi,

This is a nice image of a fantastic bird. I agree with you comment about head angle but as it is searching for food I don't think it matters as much as it would if the shot was a standard portrait. I don't mind the tight crop and wouldn't change anything else.
It looks like you have done the best you can in the situation.

Loi I agree with your comments, it may be possible to add a little canvas to address?

Your self critique mirrors my thoughts exactly.
The exposure is spot on as I imagine it is very easy to blow out the whites on the cheek. The IQ is excellent.
The raised leg and crest are wonderful.
It would be quite easy to add a bit of canvas on the top and bottom and a bit hardor on the right but doable if you are so inclined,

Hi Gail, I have a sliver on the top, but cropped becase I don't think I can add canvas to the right -too hard for me. Agreed that I could add a little canvas at the bottom, but that alone won't help the image significantly, so left as is. Not a great comp by any means, but I thought the bird is beatiful and the details are great especially with the 2X and is worth sharing from that basis.

I wasn't going to post it, but spent the Saturday at the lA zoo with my wife and saw 2 miserable looking West African Crowned Crane there, so that motivated me to post this image. These cranes are stunning in the wild!

    Thank you everyone.

Hi Loi, with only one central FP this is really good, nice detail, whites held and having the raised foot is a nice touch. Certainly if you had the time, swopping to the 1.4 would have been better, more space, better SS and a choice of options for your FP, but it's easy with hindsight. Personally I might 'tweak' the grass in HSL, but this is all personal taste.
I think come March you will come back with some cracking images, you have far more under your belt and knowing the camps you are in for a feast, just take enough back-up's and 'mirror' everything.
