Default fast af with tape and steady monopods... RANT

    Hey Everyone!

    (beware happy rant to follow)

Not a question this time, but a discovery; times two!!
first off, I decided to tape the pins on my 1.4 ii (canon) so I could (long shot) use it with my 50d and 400 5.6. As you know, the 400 5.6 focuses super quick by itself, and with the converter it won't even try. FOR SOME REASON, TAPED PINS WITH THIS COMBO =AF THE SPEED OF MY 150-500 OS (from way back when) and, to boot, SHARP AS A TACK (mostly... before any mfa) especially when stopped down 2/3 or 1 stop. ****!
I will post some real life samples today (if it isn't too icy/snowy) (in MA, usa) as I have only tested it in my living room, focusing on drink labels and lamps and the cracks in the window frame.... speaking of which, relatively snappy af in a dark living room pointed at a soft drink bottle I think speaks foritself. I used a betterbeamer and flash of course to actually shoot said bottle, but still...
so any way, I am loosing almost 2 stops of light with this setup, after stopping down. this leads me to discovery 2.
I am a super shaky caffeinated sort of guy, and need like 1/800th for a 600mm equivalent (50d and 400) so, I was amazed when, putting the tc combo on the monopod solely for weight reasons, I could shoot between 1/250 (x sync) and 1/400 and get sharp shots. with the tc.

I guess monopods really help the super shaky, much more so than the mere one stop advantage I was hearing.

sorry everyone for that rant... Just wanted to help.

I originally wanted to save this years' photo earnings for a 300 2.8 is mk1.... now I might just get away with a ff body and this taped setup. probs cheaper anywho.

Thanks to everyone here for being helpful!

    (I'll get those samples soon)

here are a two robin shots I processed from this morning. out in the woods, totally average robin working distance. they are not as sharp as any of the big whites. but for what I do, (little prints and canvases and web stuff) this is great.

Hi Jay, glad the technique is working out to your liking. I tried the tape trick on the 100-400 a few years ago and gave up after two minutes...slow as molasses.

Depending on which body you eventually get you may not need to tape the pins after that...
