I made this image at my back yard. I had the 600mm with a 1.4tc waiting for a painted bunting when the woodpecker appeared, i was barely able to fit him in the frame.

    Canon MKIII
    F 8.0
    1/300
    ISo 400
    600mm x 1.4 tc
    Manual exposure
    Fill flash
    Full Frame

I remember this one Adams! The BG is great and the colors and sharpness are really superb. Good balanced use of flash.

I would add a little canvas on the left side, other than that I wouldnt change anything.

A very handsome subject you have here. I like images with a subject large in the frame, colorful and well exposed. This one fits that to a T.

Great capture, pose and exposure. The colors are fantastic. Like the deep rich green background
I do agree about adding more canvas on the left of the frame...:D

The complimentary green BG energizes that red head, while the light sienna browns in the bark picks up the related lighter, reddish-browns on the bird's body. The perfect alignment of the body and the slight boost in DOF from the f/8.0 gave perfect sharpness from the tip of the closest claw nearly to the more distant wing tips. Very attractive bark textures and tones. The fill flash worked well in revealing details from highlights all the way into the blacks. Agree that the left edge of frame is a bit tight, but man, this is an absolutely splendid image. Congratulations!

I hate to be the odd man out. I love the bird, perch and the back ground. But the colors as a whole seem a bit too saturated. Perhaps lighten them up some.
