    Default Calling Snipe.

    Nikon D4
    Nikon 300ml 2.8

Shot taken from my car window ,managed to get the Snipe to call back at me by my poor attempt at mimicking its call(with my lips) not a recording, I have found that this often works for me.Taken on Moorland in the North of England.

Thanks for looking and also for your comments on my last post much appreciated

This is a lovely shot Keith.
    Good field craft as well.
I love the color palette of the BG and the moss on the perch. I did a browser scroll and the image looks good if you take just enough off the bottom to get rid of the wire ( of course you would need to take a bit off the left to keep the proportion the same). However I do like it with the wire as well. If you keep the comp as is ,I would blend the bright round area on the left of the image into the BG a bit
You have shown the malleable bill really nicely here and the calling pose is great.
I might sharpen the head and eye area a bit more.
The way the head angle is makes the eye look very set back in the head. I hadn't noticed that in the snipe before.
All in all, a terrific shot,
    Gail

What a super calling pose, BG and perch. The rusty wire works well in this scene. You made yourself a fine image! Agree on a tad more sharpening.

Hi Keith, good calling pose with the open bill, and I do like the detail and colours on this fellow. Thats a fine BG too. Even before reading Gail's suggestion on coming up from the bottom, I would have suggested the same.

Great calling pose with a nice HA too. I'm not digging the wire myself either and can see a version without it.

Gorgeous image. The calling pose is stunning. Exposure control and colours works good. And i like the BG and the wire is ok for me.

It shows a detail of the habitat in which the bird lives.
I agree on a tad more sharpening, too.

Hi Keith, killer BKG, love the soft, muted colours, they really set the subject off well. Good timing on the open bill nice behavioural aspect. Don't have a problem with the wire as I know how difficult it is to get a subject to play ball and be on a perfect perch, unless it's a set-up. Nice space around the subject, not cramped, or as if you were on top of the subject, likewise having the side profile.

Thanks folks, Gail I find your comment re the malleable upper mandible interesting I think it must be sensitive when probing for it's food and I wonder if the eye being set back also helps the bird with it's probing.I am sure we all know when photographing none set up wildlife which I know makes life a lot less difficult we have to take what's on offer so I was pleased to get the rustic post and at least the wire was weathered which does help. Got a real thing about sharpening I do see your point but I hate to see birds that look over processed so I do tend to go the other way but hey! each to there own .
    Thanks again much appreciated.

Excellent pose and composition. Love the bird placement in the frame and the bg.
Since the perch and wire are nicely weathered, they work for me just fine.
I only ever see Snipes after I've flushed them. Great job getting this guy out in the open like this.

Excellent catch here Keith. I think you have it about as sharp as it can get with the shutter speed and subject movement. The fence is OK with me and the calling pose is superb. No more to do in my view!

Wonderful sharpness and detail and beautiful BG. I think it would be a great alternative with the wire just cropped out. Plenty of room to remove some on the left if you want to keep the same aspect ratio.
