This bird was photographed during the previous fall migration 2013, on the North Shore of Lake Superior. This was the tamest American Pipit I've encountered. Normally, they can be quite twitchy and flush pretty easily, even with belly crawling. I actually set up this weed perch in between two docks, and the bird hit it off and on for about an hour. There must have been quite a bit of tiny insect food in the weeds, because the bird seemed to forage on it quite a bit. The only difficulty I ran into was that a mallard and a herring gull kept flushing the pipit. I had been feeding those two prior to noticing the pipit and setting up the salad perch, so of course those two thought I must have put some food in the weeds They kept coming in close and flushing the pipit, then I would act disinterested, they would go away, then the pipit would come right back in and start foraging again. Anyway, setting up weed perches is definitely something I am going to try more of with shorebirds and other species that forage at the water's edge....Canon7d, Sigma50/500os, iso800, f8, 1/500, cropped, selective NR to the bg, selective USM to the subject. Excellent shot super detail nice environment, lovely pose. (funny thing is we have just had one of your pipits over here in UK a can't quite remember the name but something like grey backed or grey bellied pipit)
I have had allot of trouble getting good shots of these guys due to heat shimmer coming up from the ground. Love how they walk around pumping their tail. Great looking shot and I like detail, the BG and the perch you created. Well done
Clever thing that weed patch. Pipits are among my favorite fall migrating birds, I just love their streamlined shape and subtle but beautiful colours and markings. Nice low angle, colours, sharpness, BG. Too bad about the stem poking the bird near the leg though, but not too bad. Just a heads up that I have had good success using audio on this species...
A really nice image Shawn.
I like your low POV and thanks for the seaweed perch idea.
IQ is excellent and you had lovely light.
Agree with Daniel about the little branch.
