I captured this guy at Viera Wetlands, Viera, Florida earlier this week. Cropped about 50% to get to the square format, processed in Adobe Lightroom.

    Joe:

Well exposed with good look back pose. Just for personal taste, I would consider a modest crop off the top, as I don't feel the extra real estate up there adds to the comp.

You've done a great job exposing for your raptor and you have super details. I think I might consider a crop from the right (and a slight crop from the left) and going vertical instead. If you are going to go horizontal, you are doing to have to take a little off of the bottom as well as the top. I just tried both. It's a matter of personal taste, but I think my eye is telling me vertical.

Nice light quality. I like that it was not so bright as to block up the shadows....I like the sqare format here. I think it's under-utilized in bird photography, and it "feels" right to my visual senses on this one. I dig the gnarly old perch.

I like the perch, pose, exposure, sharpness and red shoulder is well displayed. Excellent image Joe!

I really don't have a problem with the crop it looks fine to me but it,s interesting to see others points of view, very good colour and detail in the bird.

Thank you all for viewing and commenting. To those who suggested a vertical crop I have made a Virtual Copy in Lightroom and cropped as suggested (posted below). I used a format of 4x3 rather than 2x3.
