Hi Morkel - looks like a painful meal, similar to my desert ele's meal. Not sure I've seen a rhino's tongue in an image before. I do find myself missing the second ear but I'm guessing you had too much lens to include it. If it were mine I might soften the white spot on the lhs a bit more. It's really all about the details and texture here and I find myself continuing to look at them.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Great close-up shot of mud covered face, typical rhino behaviour. Good to see a live one with its horns still attached!

A different kind of image from you - and I like it. Great details and nice to be able to study a BR at such close range. They really do have poky little eyes!

sad to think this picture could be all we have left soon :( But a black rhino up close like that must have been a thrill, nice work but missing that ear too a bit.

Hi Morkel, a sad reflection on mankind based on Neil's note. I hope your children get to see them 'in the wild' before the inevitable happens.

I like the behavioural aspect, and going close in, although I would like to have seen this at 900px. I also like the warmth in the image, but I might be tempted to add an exposure adj just to drop things a little to vary the tone/light on the face to try and create a little more depth to it?

Nice lighting and good detail I wouldn't change a thing, .....well one tiny point, maybe the eye!

    Thanks folks for your comments.
Rachel - I do have some with both ears, and I do have better "tongue" shots
Steve and Neil - sad state of affairs indeed. 37 rhinos already butchered in 2014!
Jonathan - what needs to happen to the eye? Lighten it?

Totally and utterly unacceptable, and for what, man's greed? What happens when the Rhino & Elephants go, what next? I really do hope your children get to see them in the wild Morkel, perhaps they are one of the last generations to do so?

    Indeed it's a frightening thought...
My kids have seen them - whether they will remember them if they never get to see them after this year is an open question as they are still quite small. My daughter loves the eles and rhinos and she's quite the game spotter (we took them to the Kalahari a few times already and they were also just with us to Etosha - later this year we'll take them to Kruger as well).

Nothing you can control Morkel, it's just that the eye is difficult to discern properly, being so surrounded by the mud, and is it half closed?

Any sighting of a rhino is a great sighting, Morkel! We lost so many around here in Kwazulu Natal. Local anti poaching team is working day and night to keep our rhino safe, all credit to them. Andre and I went to a local Private Game Reserve this morning and saw two rhino moms with calves-tall grass and all, we still managed a few images…Yours is such a lovely close-up of this majestic animal! Don't mind the one ear missing, the eye is usually difficult to bring out when processing but I feel you did justice to this chap, up-close-and-personal, thorns and all!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Nice shot with very good detail. To my eyes the whites are a bit hot. And I am not sure I am in any position to criticize someone else's compo, the composition doesn't 100% work for me. I think it might have worked better to crop off at the shoulders and show the whole head. But as you used a prime, there might have been to much focal length and nothing to do about it.
