Default Blue-winged Warbler - Luring Warblers with mealworms

I'd like to get more Warbler pictures this year. In the past I just lucked across them (like this shot) or I might use recorded songs.
I've never tried to lure Warblers with food.

Does anyone have experience using mealworms or other insects to pull in warblers?

I was lucky to find this bird was sitting in a hickory tree right behind our house. The pink flower-like structures are the leaf buds opening.

All comments and suggestions on how to improve are welcome!

Nice backyard bird! Great perch, pose, and BG with excellent detail!

I would try toning down the leaves a bit.

The bird looks great, and a nice.
Depending on your ethics, I might take out the complete BG branch or at least the cut off leaves.

Beautiful "grab" shot. The color scheme is nice. The subject is isolated well against the clean background. I like Mike's idea of toning down some of the brighter areas on the buds/leaves on the left, and also tone down the brighter highlight on the perch to right of the bird. I also wonder what a little fill flash at the time of capture might have done to balance the ambient light here.

    Henry,

I have had luck using meal worms on Yellow-rumped Warblers so I don't see why other species wouldn't be a possiblity too.

These are such beautiful warblers. And he chose a nice perch for you. I agree with toning down the highlights on the LH flowers, and were it mine I'd experiment with deleting the RH oof branch altogether, and cropping a bit from the left. If you had been able to move the camera a bit to the left to get the entire blossom, it would have taken it up a notch IMO.

Hi Henry, nicely framed in the fork of the perch, and those yellows are really striking. I only wish you had a little more room on the left, that you didnt cut off the end of the bud. A slightly better HA would have put this up a few notches.

Funny you should ask the question about mealworms as this is something that I want to experiment with this spring and summer. We'll have to compare notes!

As for the image, this is a gorgeous bird in a very nice setting. Nice BG to set off the yellow featehrs. Do you have any more room at left for the full bloom? A better HA would been nice and I also think you may have a bit of a magenta cast which rendered the wing a bit on the purplish side.

This makes me look forward to spring!

Agree about some of the above comments. I think I would just remove the OOF piece on the far right, and tone down the other branches. Sweet bird though. Don't see why the old wiggleys should not work with warblers. Folks over here seem to use them for everything. They even catapult them out on the beach for waders !!
    Cheers

I like the pose, perch, sharpness and BG. I agree with toning down the flowers and bright spots of the perch. Nice image Henry!

Nice image with great details. I love the composition, pose and colors.
A little more space on the left side would be great
