Default Red Tailed Hawk Takes Off

I went to Carizzo Plain to check out the raptors. The plain is really a high desert plateau, no high trees, so the raptors utilize mostly man made posts as perch. These posts are not pretty, but they are at car level, so setting for shots at eye level.

I didn't include the perch since it was an ugly metal pipe.

Hi Loi, nice light and really sharp on the eye. When I first saw this it looked like a hawk falling. I think for these types of shots it helps to have the perch so there is no doubt what the behavior is exactly. But I understand why you cropped it out though.

    I like it a lot. You're a great photographer.

    Hi Loi,
I like this shot as it is nice and sharp and the exposure looks great. I take many take off shots and unless the birds feet are touching or barley off the perch I leave the perch out also. Nice work!

Nice launch pose. I like the way the head stands out against the far wing. Square crop works well.

Excellent pose with those visible talons. I'd typically crib about the head merging with the wing, but given the color difference, it stands out well enough to separate. This is a pose where a square crop works perfectly. I wish the bg was more interesting, but sounds like that's not possible at this location.

I like the dynamic pose and the light! I would sharpen the head a bit more

Head is a bit soft, would do more sharpening like Arash said. Square crop does not work for me here, I would give it more room on the left.

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments. Arash nailed it on the head with the head just a touch soft as the AF point wasn't right on it. I will try to sharpen it a little more. Need to practice my reflect a little more! Loi

    Hi Arash,

I resharpened the image using USM

    first round: 120/0.3/0
second round to head area only: 60/0.3/0

Hope it does not look too crunchy.

    Thank you for your comment.

it does look good now. Was the original soft? if the RAW is sharp you shouldn't be doing this much sharpening BTW

Arash, yes, the original just a tad soft around the head. the previous frame is sharper, but this one has a nice pose. Thank you again. Loi
