Default First Light of 2014 - Snowy Owl

Something a bit different for a Snowy Owl. To complement my previous thread "Last Light of 2013"...here is the flip side - the sunrise of January 1st 2014. A great way to begin a new year, hopefully lots more to come! There was lots of atmosphere shimmer and you can see it lots here...with a balmy -25C that morning could it have been heat shimmer?? I realize the eyes are the most striking part of an owl, but here I hope you can enjoy the image despite them not being as prominent as in other images... Fun to try stuff!!

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/6.3, ISO 800, handheld, FF, the sun was burnt white so I selected from its' inner rim the palest yellow and used the paint bucket tool to fill it in with that selected shade.

Simple and powerful, like the paintings of Mark Rothko.
For comparison, here is Rothko's "Orange Red Orange" (1961-2)

    Ooo this is beautiful Dan.
Getting the opportunity to photograph these birds is one thing, but the way you use those opportunities and creatively execute a whole variety of images is thoroughly admirable and inspiring.
    Awesome work

    The color palette is beautiful.
    Comp is just right.
I wish the owl was either in complete silhouette or that we had a bit more details on the owl around the eyes.
I really like where you are going with this,
    Gail

Great vision Daniel, no worries about damaging the sensor?

Creative for sure. I keep hearing the planet of the apes theme when I look at this :) Planet of the owls?
