Hi Gary - It's a good close-up of a bison, something we don't often see posted here. There's no color profile embedded in your image so there is likely a shift when posted. For best viewing on the web embed a sRGB color profile. Nice low pov and it looks like you handled the exp well. I would prefer a bit more room above, below and to the left.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Gary, good detail, but to me the image is showing the NIK application, as the darker, shadow areas are illustrating noise. I do like the detail within both the subject and snow and especially the eye, but I feel there is a better crop. Perhaps post the image FF, we could then perhaps offers some alternatives.

    Was this with a tour?

Rachel, thanks for the heads up on the color profile. The convert to sRGB box in Save for the web was unchecked. I recently converted to PSCC. It may have become unchecked in the conversion. Steve, the posted image is not cropped. I added a few mm to the left border. My main focus in this image was the eye. I have had difficulty capturing good eyes in prior bison photos. I may have gone over board here. Originally, I also thought there was noise in the image. The dark hair on top of the head looks like it contains a lot of noise artifact. To my eye, on further exam, dark areas else where are not noisy. I believe the fine particles of snow and ice in the hair impart the appearance of noise. I have included the original image in the repost. Thanks to both of you for the look and comments

    Hi Gary,

very nice image of this animal. Would love to stick my head in the snow, sadly none here only mud!
All has been covert already. I would check how a square crop would look like.

    have a great eve

    ciao Anette

Hi Gary, nice details of the snow and the bison, good exposure. These guys are difficult to photograph. I'd second Anette on a square crop as it may show the eye better. As it is, the eye is too far lie in the frame and there was not a strong catch light to draw one's attention to the eye. TFS. Loi

Steve, the posted image is not cropped.
Interesting, irrespective of a few mm it creates an almost pano format I feel.

My main focus in this image was the eye.
Where it should be IMHO and I don't think you have gone overboard.

The dark hair on top of the head looks like it contains a lot of noise artifact. I believe the fine particles of snow and ice in the hair impart the appearance of noise.
Indeed, that is the area that I was referring to, but if it's ice fine, however where did you then apply DE & TC, was it just in the snow, just curious.

    Thanks

Thanks to all. Steve, I used DE and TC on the entire image. I did a small selective curves adjustment on the snow. Failed to mention that initially.

Nice close-up impact here Gary. I would have liked a sliver more space on the LHS, but appreciate that it's close to your FF image.
I quite like the square crop!
When applying Nik's effects, I try and mask it - usually I make the Nik layer 60-70% opacity and then mask and paint through to make it apply only to certain areas.

Love the square crop too, Gary! Adds more impact and now the focus is on the eye

    Kind regards,

    Hi Gary ,
like the square crop.Like the overall tonality , colors and clarity.
But i would watch the blacks in the fur , too choked for my taste, maybe due to the use of TC.
    Great eye !!!!!!!
