Default Boundary Bay Short-Ear In Flight

    Hi Everyone,
Here is an image taken at the start of December in Boundary Bay near Ladner B.C. Don't let the lovely sun fool you in this one. Temperatures were -10 celcius with a breeze. Good thing I had my hot packs with me.

    Stats: Canon EOS-1D Mark4, 600mm IS2 with 1.4X, ISO400 at F/8, 1/1600sec

    Take care and good light,

    Steve

Steve, nice image and thanks for field descriptions. Not much to critique...love the background and eye contact. In a perfect world, perhaps a slight angle of the head would have revealed the other eye.

Nice capture! I agree, a turn of the head so both eyes are visible would have been ideal. Also, you might look at lightening or cloning out the shadow from the front wing that shows on the neck as its a bit distracting.

Beautiful shot, Steve. Sure, the other eye would have been nice, but I'd love to have this one just as it is. I could also imagine a little more room right and bottom for him to fly into, but no biggie. Nicely captured.

Beautiful owl! Nice and sharp, excellent BG. Lowering the mid-tones a tad would help make the light appear richer here. But all else looks great to me.

    Hi Everyone,
Here is a different one in the same sequence with a little better eye contact. Taken somewhat further away it is a bit of a crop - still nice though IMHO.

    Cheers,

    Steve

Beautiful images Steve! I do like the second one better but would love to have both in my files. I like the sharpness, feather patterns and complimentary BG.

    Thanks Jim,
It was one of those situations where you had to take a lot of images before getting the light close to being right. Not to mention I find that the Mark 4 doen't seem to track and focus quite as well in unidirectional light situations. Probably would have gotten more clear images on a cloudy day. There were a lot of harriers and we did find some long-eared owls in the hedgerow but, the short-ear images overall were the best.

    Take care,

    Steve

Another vote for the second one (although I'd be stoked to have the first one in my files too).
    Terrific bg and details.
