This is a super image Ian. I really like the smart, grey and white look with the hints of red and orange here and there. The OOF cranes at the back add nicely- do you have the whole head of the bird at the left edge? The subjects really add a lot of interest with the interaction. I would clone out the grey patch at the lower edge, right.

Great catch, nicely processed! John caught all the things I see.
Which bird at the left, John? The Crane? I had the whole bird in my original version, but felt that having the whole bird there drew the eye away from the main subject. Since he is OOF and partially cut-off, I felt it removed the distraction. No?
This image is inspiring to me, Ian. And I wonder where you made it and other details. I can hear the noise (from the chicks). That's one of the things that let me know I'm involved in an image: an auditory response. I'm glad to have come across this today.
Thanks, Jim. This was taken a couple of weeks ago at Bosque del Apache NWR (San Antonio, NM). The Sandhilll Cranes were sleeping amongst a few hundred/thousand Snow Geese and barely had room to step. The noise was quite impressive. All of the birds were beginning to get ready for their fly-out to the feeding fields.

Hi Ian, I know what John means, however I'm OK with that one, it's OOF enough I personally feel, it's the grey head towards bottom RH corner right on the trim, just clone the head out, it needs to go.
One of your best image Ian, really like the simple colour palette.

Ian,
That is an amazing shot. I love the colors in this shot. Didn't notice the out of focus heads, but I am new at this. Was this a crop?

Thanks, folks. It was cropped a small amount for composition, David.
