Welcome Glenn!
A beautiful first post but that is to be expected with the company you keep!
I am viewing this on my laptop ( desktop had to be put away for room for Xmas dinner and guests!) so may be a bit off in my critique.
The comp and look back pose are excellent.I wish the head wasn't turned quite so far but that is a minor issue.
Lovely, unobtrusive and delicate perch that suits the kestrel perfectly.
The BG has a nice subtle graduated blue. I think because I am on my laptop the image appears a bit flat ie could use a couple of points of blacks in the neutrals in selective coloring in Photoshop. However this last point may be due to my laptop and I will defer to others who are on their desktops.
A beautiful image and one to be proud of. I am looking forward to seeing more pics,
Gail

Welcome!
A wonderful image of a beautiful bird! I'm jealous because I've never been able to get close enough to photograph the Kestrels in my back yard.
I agree with Gail that the image is a bit flat. I've reworked it to show the way it looks best on my laptop monitor. I boosted the contrast and I boosted the rufous hues pulled back on the yellows.
Looking forward to seeing more of your images!

All right!! Glad you finally made the big step. You will love this site and you will get some great feedback from many great eyes.
The shot looks beautiful and I like the look back pose, one of my favorite poses for her. She is such a good looking female of this species.
Henrys re-post looks good in the terms of contrast, but I think the color has gotten a bit on the blue side, not just the BG but the bird.
The feather detail and techs look great and I like the soft blue BG. I agree that a bump up in the blacks a bit as Gail mentioned would look good.
A killer first post!!
Look forward to seeing lots of your great frames, so don't be shy ;)

Hi Glenn, welcome to BPN and what an awesome first post. Great details and sharpness, lovely bird and lovely pose. Can we trade? I have access to a male kestrel and you and David a female? How do we get them to meet? Regarding the image, side lighting is always tough. The front of the bird was in the shadow, so giving an apparent flatness. Did you try to lift the shadow in PP? Loi

Welcome Glenn,
Superb image to start with. Very nice pose, colors and composition.Agree with gail's comments. Re post looks better and kestrel pops up nicely against blue sky.
Regards,
Satish.

Welcome to BPN Glenn!! Bird, perch and comp all look good to me. I do wish for a better head angle not turned away so much (what we refer to as "HA" here) but I suspect that may have put the face into shade judging from the light angle. Do you have one where he is looking towards our left and angled just a few degrees towards us? That would have been the perfect combo right there.
Looking forward to more from you, and wishing you a Happy New Year!

A big welcome to BPN Glenn! Good to see you posting! I know this bird pretty well, thanks to my time spent with you and David. Your sharpness is excellent, and I like how the bird looks against the blue sky BG. The repost definitely gives the image more pop and is more faithful to how the bird looks in real life IMO. Like Daniel, I would have preferred that the head was pointed slightly towards us. I'll be back in So. Cal. in a week to photograph with my wife. Hopefully, we'll cross paths with you!

I like the look back pose, sharpness, details and composition. The HA could be better and agree with Gail's suggestion of boosting the blacks and neutrals in selective colour. I would be happy to have this in my files and welcome to BPN.
