    Default Glaucous Gull

I'm posting this in response to Artie's request (See Glaucous Gull Yawning a few panes down) I have not yet looked through the images that I took of this bird to see if this is the best of the bunch.

Artie, this was taken on the Jetty at Shinecock West. There have been two immature Icelands (yet to be photographed by me) and this bird for a couple weeks now. Also two are being reported in Brooklyn. This was a first for me.

The bird is quite tame. This is nearly full frame with a straight 300. The day was very overcast and light flat.

Thanks Grace. It sure looks like a first winter glaucous to me. Glauscous-winged is a darker gray with grey primaries and I do not think that there are any East Coast records.... See you there.

I've enjoyed both images of this, imo, young glaucous gull. The layers of rocks with the water finishing the top of the frame in the background makes for a pretty slick composition! Also, I think young glaucous winged gulls do not show clean pink bills with defined black tips like this. I think their bill's are generally more dark/blackish in coloration. I've photographed a few immature glaucous gulls in Minnesota. I think they are a gorgeous gull, particularly because of that lovely bill! I think if the gull was a second year gull, it's eyes would be yellowish in color...? But more knowledgeable folks please weigh in...I love learning this kind of stuff :) Wonderful images Grace.

As a consequence this image is very low contrast. I've attached a reworked version. I simply increased the contrast using a in Photoshop.
    Do you think this helps?

I prefer the "flat" image which is superb photography of the bird with very good conditions.

I'm not sure why we're discussing glaucous-winged. It's a first cycle glaucous gull. (Maybe I said something in a previous post). Anyhow, thanks for the comments. Were it not for all the snowies on LI, this individual would be getting much more attention from birders and photogs alike. I'm fine with the amount of contrast in my original post cause that's what it looked like.
