Default Eastern Screech Owl (gray morph)

    Hi -

THis is an Eastern Screech Owl (gray morph) that I found and photographed this week. It was roosting in a tree 15 feet from the road in a cavity that was the same height as my car window. THis owl was only 1/4 mile away from the Rufous I posted before so maybe they are mates. I used a beanbag from my Dad's car window to steady the shot. We've been really lucky with Screech Owls lately.

I had to shrink this down to 600x600 to get this file under 400.

Photographed late in the day after sunset there was still a pink glow in the sky which seemed to make a purplish cast on the image.

    Canon 5D MIII
    Canon 500mm f/4

    Manual Exposure

    ISO 2000
    f/5.6
1/60s (this was because it was dark)

I changed the color balance a bit to bring some more yellow in as it seemed purple. I also did a USM of the whole image.

Please let me know what you think and I hope to see him again tomorrow.

Effective use of subtle colors; they let the orange "halo" behind the head glow a little more.
The repeated ovals in the face and in the opening of the tree are especially effective with the symmetrical presentation.
    Well done!

This is a stunning hole to get an Owl image in. I would like to see a vertical with as much space on top as you have on the bottom now. Well done.

Fine details, composition and eye contact.
A little more space on top to be seen completely the hole (the upper arch)
My english is not so good but i hope you understand what i mean

Great cavity and owl. I like the shape of the opening ... not perfect with the slight curve bottom right. I would also prefer a vertical crop and the owl a little more off center to the right

    Hi -

I was not able to get the top of the cavity with some of my shots but I did get a couple earlier that afternoon.

I've attached one I got when there was more light, and my settings were ISO 1000, f/5.6, 1/80s.

I cropped for vertical and warmed the image a little as it was bluish. I then sharpened the owl using a USM.

The owl's face is not straight ahead as before but I hope this vertical crop is better.

What a great opportunity, to have both morphs within close proximity and reachable from the car window. I like the second version of this one. He's really giving you the eye. I'm wondering what it might look like to darken the inside of the hole a bit, but you may not be inclined to do that sort of thing. In any event, a very nice shot that I'd love to have in my files.

I darkened the hole a tad based on Bill's suggestion. Mat saying i did the best job but it's decent...
