Something else...another point of view. I got to the minimum focusing distance to this bird by crawling inch by inch closer and closer. It is still a crop, but I like it.

Love the comp, and especially the inclusion of the legs at bottom corner...very well thought out. I also like the ruffled feathers of the neck. I almost never worry about dof, but here is one situation where a smaller aperture would have helped alot IMO.
Nice capture I love the feather detail..
The preening pose is very nice, particularly due to your intimate working distance. In regards to the composition, the bird's head looks great placed against that light blue water bg. The details are sharp, borderline oversharpened in a few areas imo, but that is highly subjective....A beautiful image all around of this species sir.
Lovely portrait, with tons of details, Lorant.
The image causes the eye to be led around the image. Well done.
Beautiful shot Lori! Seeing your settings and thinking of DOF too, I suggest to not be afraid of using a higher ISO to gain DOF. Wonderful photo indeed. Gotta be happy with getting this close.
I can show you an example here I took of a Bar-tailed Godwit recently on a rocky headland. ISO1600, f/22, 1/400th, 500mm with 2x and 1.4x stacked together for a maximum FL of 1,400mm. Full frame shot as presented. I know you didn't have a tripod, but with a skimmer pod you'd get very good results as well.

I do like it as is!
Very nice pose, super sharp eye, excellent light. I wouldn't change a thing.
Hi Lorant, I can see what you were after, and I do like the the pose with the excellent detail on the head and neck. Im with Dan, if you had more DOF, this would be right up there.
Thanks for the comment, Akos. Nice shot of this shore bird from down under. I see the point about the DOF, still, if my bird was parallel to the sensor of the camera I think it would have been almost sharp with the f:8. Still, not being used to shoot anymore I did not think about stopping down. Next time I will.
Cheers.
Thank you guys for the comments. I have to say I should have thought about stopping down and raising the ISO on the filed...I did not. Good thing that I like the photo as it is still:). Next time, Gadget.
