Self critique: I wish for more DOF but he was so close that I don't know if even f9 would have gotten the rear leg sharp.

Wonderful focus right on the head and the worm. I love the mud spatters as it gives a terrific sense of place and "this is happening now". Nice low angle shot, so I'll bet you ended up with a bunch of that mud on you as well. I don't mind the OOF tail and leg, my only thought would be to consider cropping a bit more off the top.

Awesome image Gail. Excellent pose, lovely plumage on the bird and just love your low shooting angle against that lovely bg.
The worm takes it over the top and so do the flying droplets.
Hard to critique this, but if I were to make any changes, I'd add just a touch more space to the bottom, evict the dust spot in the bg and possibly evict a couple of those oof flying droplets.
    Fine work

    Wow image here
i love the IQ, yes the DOF is something i too wanted but if you were so close no point even going with higher value
light is wonderful and the worm is a added interest, the particles of mud in the air add a lot to the image for me
lovely piece of action over all

Great low angle and action. The flying sand /mud makes it.

    Gail,

The willet may be the main subject here, but it's the worm that steals the show!

Love the low angle and especially like the flying mud off of the worm. Wouldn't change a thing.

    Thanks Sid!
I have to laugh at myself as I am a "dust bunny" policewoman and I missed my own dust bunny! I did vacillate about cloning out the OOF droplets but decided to leave as is. I can certainly remove them,

This is pretty awesome Gail, the action is superb and that is quite a prey item! My type of low angle. I almost never worry about dof except for tight portraits..no need to worry about here either. The splashing mud drops put this over the top. I'm with Sid for more room below.

P.S. For one who spots them from a mile away I too I missed a dust bunny on one of my images lately!

Gail the worm and the flying bits of mud make it for me I would be very pleased if it was mine.

    Gail:

No DOF issues for me, the action of the worm and flying drops commands our attention.

Yes, to a sliver more on bottom and some off the top.

    Great shooting angle.

    Well done!

    Cheers

Hi Gail, excellent low angle, sharp details where it counts, and captured in lovely soft late light. The flying muddy droplets takes this over the top. Comp wise, I would add a bit more to the bottom, and take a bit off the top. Being so close, I dont believe stopping down more would have achieved any more DOF.

This is a simple yet interesting image. Nice sharpness all around where really counts. The worm is an added bonus.

Excellent image Gail! I like the low angle, light, exposure, worm, mud drops and details. I would add a little on the bottom as well.

Awesome low angled shore bird image with great lighting, superb head and body angle (particularly for the action/behavior). For me, having critical focus extend to the legs, (because I like all the leg detail on these bigger shorebirds) , works better. Regardless,...I love the breeding plumage too!

This is great Gail. Besides the great techs I really like the worm and the suspended mud drops. Great feather detail too. Well done
